Are you….?

  • Excited about hands-on science teaching?
  • Experienced teaching or working with youth?

Help bring the Induction Cooktop Teaching Program (ICTP) to Oakland schools. ICTP helps students understand how cleaner cooking appliances can improve their family’s health and our climate. The Classroom Instructor will coordinate and deliver lessons on biology, environmental science, magnetism, and demonstration cooking designed for multiple grade levels. This role will also train to manage the program as it grows into new classrooms across Oakland.

Participating students have the opportunity to bring home induction cooktops and equipment, and participate in online cooking classes to learn how to use their new cooktops. At the end of the program, families may choose to keep their cooktops free of charge, reducing indoor air pollution while avoiding costly appliance upgrades.

The Climate Education Classroom Instructor will…

  • Receive paid training on all aspects of the project.
  • Deliver the ICTP curriculum in select elementary, middle, and/or high school classrooms (in-person and/or remote, depending on program requirements).
  • Coordinate, schedule, and communicate with school staff about ICTP programming.
  • Help network and outreach to recruit new participating schools and classrooms.
  • Work with the ICTP Project Lead to adapt the project to varying classroom/school needs and opportunities as they arise.

A good fit…

  • Is excited by the idea of learning and applying activity-based teaching methods with students in grades 3-12.
  • Demonstrates the ability to thoughtfully and effectively communicate and interact with people who have different backgrounds, experiences and abilities.
  • Is organized and can manage their time independently.
  • Is able to communicate fluently in English and Spanish (written and spoken).
  • Be committed to learning and applying Environmental Justice principles when working with students and families, school staff, community members, and our team.

Candidates must also:

  • Have a vehicle to transport materials to and from schools/classrooms.
  • Provide proof of current TB test; up-to-date COVID vaccination; and be willing to complete a fingerprint background check.

Compensation and hours

  • Compensation is $40/hour (limited to $42,000 for a 12-month period). We expect the role to require approximately 20 hours/week. This schedule is negotiable based on program needs and instructor’s availability.
  • This is a part-time independent contractor (W9) position running through the end of the school year in 2026.
